A grandma of
eight, 74, has written a song to call for an end of shaming LGBTI people who
want to feel comfortable with their partners in public.
Sherri Gray,
from Nashville, Tennessee, took to a piano and poured her heart out. She was
inspired by going to a church service for LGBTI people and realising that this
place, apart from bars, was one of the only places they could feel safe to hold
their partner's hand in public.
Gray hopes
allies will be inspired to help the LGBTI community feel more comfortable to
show public displays of affection with her song, 'Let's All Hold Hands'.
'I thought it
was such a tragedy that they couldn't feel comfortable holding hands in public
with their partner,' she told Gay Star News.
'The one thing
we can do is love each other. We're all just human beings, what's wrong with
just being human regardless of the package we're in?'
'Let's All Hold
Hands' is a follow up to a song she wrote two years ago in tribute to her lesbian
niece for her wedding. It went viral, with thousands of people listening to her
pro-gay message.
'I'm vehement I
will work for equal rights until the day I die,' Gray added to GSN. 'I'm never
going to back off. When my rigid, churchy friends say something bad about gay
people, I tell them what I think.'
Gray hopes that
one day the world will celebrate a 'Universal Hand Holding Day', proving that
it doesn't matter what sexual or gender identity you are, you should be able to
show love and not be hated for it.
