ALEX NEWELL HONORS MARIAH CAREY WITH STUNNING PERFORMANCE OF 'HERO' @ GLAAD AWARDS (VIDEO)

It’s one thing to sing a song as challenging, and as famous as, ‘Hero’ — it’s another to perform it live in front of its original singer Mariah Carey.

Former Glee star Alex Newell, 23, sang ‘Hero’ in honor of Mariah who’s the Ally Award recipient at Saturday’s GLAAD Media Awards held in New York City.

Mariah was seen visibly touched by the moving performance by Newell, who totally slayed the high notes.

The crowd even gave a standing ovation at the end of Newell’s spectacular solo.

THROW BACK VIDEO: I STILL BELIEVE BY MARIAH CAREY

Mariah Carey co-produced her cover of the song with Stevie J and Mike Mason for her eighth album, #1's, and it was released as the album's third single in 1998. She re-recorded the song as a tribute to Starr, as she had been Starr's backing singer in the late 1980s and Starr had helped jump-start Carey's career by handing a demo tape to Sony Music Entertainmentexecutive Tommy Mottola, who had then signed Carey to her first recording contract.

Unlike the preceding single from #1's, "When You Believe," "I Still Believe" enjoyed more success within the United States than elsewhere, peaking at number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100. Though it was Carey's first single to chart on radio airplay points alone, its airplay was relatively low while sales were much stronger. It was certified platinum by the RIAA, and was ranked 36 on the Hot 100 year-end charts for 1999. Outside the U.S. it settled in the middle of the charts, such as the United Kingdom where it reached the top twenty. It entered the Canadian top ten, but did not reach the top forty in Australia or Germany. According to Billboard, this song is a tribute to the artist who gave Carey her first big break.

THROW BACK VIDEO: MY ALL BY MARIAH CAREY

"My All" is a song by American singer-songwriter Mariah Carey from her sixth studio album, Butterfly (1997). It was released as the album's fourth and second commercial single on April 21, 1998 by Columbia Records. The song was written and produced by Carey and Walter Afanasieff. "My All" is built around Latin guitar chord melodies, and makes subtle use of Latin percussion throughout the first chorus, before taking on a more conventional contemporary R&B-style beat. Carey was inspired to write the song and use Latin inspired melodies after her trip to Puerto Rico, where she was influenced by the culture. The song's lyrics tell of a lonely woman declaring she would give "her all" to have just one more night with her estranged lover.

THROW BACK VIDEO: ALWAYS BE MY BABY BY MARIAH CAREY

"Always Be My Baby" is a song by American singer-songwriter Mariah Carey from her fifth studio album,Daydream. It was released by Columbia Records on March 9, 1996 as the third U.S. single and fourth overall. The song was written by Carey, Jermaine Dupri and Manuel Seal, who also produced the song. A mid-temposong, its lyrics describe the feeling of attachment and unity the protagonist feels towards her estranged lover, even though they are no longer together. She says he will always be a part of her and will "always be her baby" even after they move on.

Music critics have praised "Always Be My Baby". The song became Carey's 11th chart topper on the Billboard Hot 100, tying her with Madonna and Whitney Houston for most number one singles for a female artist. It spent two weeks atop the chart and became Carey's eight chart topper on the Canadian Singles Chart. In other regions, the song performed moderately, peaking at number three in the United Kingdom, number five in New Zealand, number 17 in Australia and in the top 20 in most music markets where it charted.

The song's music video features scenes of Carey frolicking by a campsite, as well as swinging on a large swing over a lake. Additional inter-cuts include scenes of two children, one male and female, sneaking out at night and spending time together by a campfire similar to Carey's location. Most scenes from the video were filmed at The Fresh Air Fund's Camp Mariah, named after Mariah Carey for her generous support and dedication to Fresh Air Fund children. The song was performed live during her Daydream World Tour (1996) and many of her future tours and concerts. "Always Be My Baby" was also featured in Carey's compilation albums, Number 1's (1998), Greatest Hits (2001) and The Ballads (2008).
