Michael Sam made his debut on ABC's Dancing With the Stars on
Monday and scored in the middle of the pack of contenders.
While Sam's footwork was characterized as sloppy by the judges, he
and partner Peta Murgatroyd scored 26 out of a possible 40 points for their
Cha-Cha dance.
'That butt is a work of art,' openly gay judge Bruno Tonioli said
to Sam after the dance.
Said judge Julianne Hough:'Your feet were a little sloppy but
overall, you have a groove within you that is so fun to watch and infectious.'
Judge Carrie Ann Inaba described Sam as 'a beautiful, gorgeous man'
with a nice booty but added he may have stuck it out a bit too much during the
performance.
Sam, the first openly gay player to be drafted by an NFL team, said
the footwork on the dance floor is far different than what it is on the
football field.
But he said he is determined to master the steps 'so we can try and
go far in this competition.'
Sam was cut by the St. Louis Rams and the Dallas Cowboys last
season but is determined to make it back to the NFL. Later this week, he is
participating in the inaugural NFL Veteran Combine at the Arizona Cardinals Practice
Facility in Tempe, Arizona.
Sam has been spending three hours a day at the gym followed by four
hours of dance rehearsal.
He said the combination has him in the best shape of his life.
