Following the decision taken earlier this week by the 9th US
Circuit Court of Appeals to strike down Nevada's constitutional ban on same-sex
marriage, same-sex weddings have begun to take place in Las Vegas.
As GayStarNews reported yesterday, Nevada Democratic Senator Kelvin
Atkinson was one of the first to take advantage of his new right to marry when
he proposed to long-term partner, Sherwood Howard, at an event celebrating
the Supreme Court's decision not to hear appeals from state's wishing to uphold
same-sex marriage bans.
They have now become the first same-sex couple to wed in the city.
Despite the fact that it was only granted permission to do so at
5pm, the Las Vegas Marriage License Bureau said that it issued no fewer than 40
marriage licenses to gay couples yesterday (Thursday 9 October) – some of whom
had patiently been waiting for several hours at the Bureau beforehand.
The first couple to get a license at the Las Vegas Marriage Bureau
were Antioco Carillo and Theodore Small.
‘We're walking on clouds,’ said Carillo to Associated Press. ‘This
is unreal.’
The first to obtain a license and then actually tie the knot were
the aforementioned Atkinson and Howard, who wed on the steps of the Bureau
immediately after getting their license.
‘It's done, we are married! Amazing!’ Tweeted the senator
afterwards.
