In a bizarre
turn of events, out-going Gambian president Yahya Jammeh has rejected the
results of the election.
The same
election he already conceded last week and then congratulated his opponent
for winning.
The anti-LGBTI
dictator, who once infamously said he would ‘slit
the throats’ of gays has cited ‘abnormalities’ in the votes.
He has called
for ‘fresh and transparent elections, which will be officiated by a God-fearing
and independent electoral commission,’ reports the BBC.
The results of
the election favored Adama Barrow with 43 per cent of the votes to Jammeh’s 39
per cent, with third-party candidate Mama Kandeh winning 17 per cent.
As a result of
these recent developments, Jammeh has taken drastic actions.
Barrow has
called for a peaceful transition of power and has denounced all attempts from
Jammeh to hold new elections.
Barrow said:
‘The outgoing president has no constitutional authority to reject the results
of the election and order for fresh elections to held,’ reports Jall
of News.
‘I wish to call
on all Gambians to go about their business. We have impressed the world for
delivering a free, fair and credible elections,’ he said.
‘I urge him to
change his current position and accept the verdict of the people in good faith
for the sake of the Gambia our homeland whose people deserve to live in peace,
freedom and prosperity,’ he said.
Jammeh said
earlier this year: ‘If you are a man and want to marry another man in this
country and we catch you, no one will ever set eyes on you again, and no white
person can do anything about it.’
The 22-year
presidential run of Jammeh has also produced a bill to ban
all gay people, as well as disparaging comments like homosexuality is
‘social cancer’ and ‘gays
are vermin that must be dealt with like mosquitos.‘
