Best Picture
Oscar winner Moonlight received three MTV Movie & TV Awards nominees today
including a nod for best kiss.
The memorable
kissing scene on a Miami beach between teenagers played by Ashton Sanders and
Jharrel Jerome will compete with sexy smooches between Emma Stone and Ryan
Gosling (Moonlight), Emma Watson and Dan Stevens (Beauty and the Beast), Taraji
P. Henson and Terrence Howard (Empire) and Zac Efron and Anna Kendricks (Mike
& Dave Need Wedding Dates).
This is the
first year the MTV awards have blended movies with television in some
categories and removed gender in others.
Moonlight was
also nominated in the new Best American Story category where it will compete
with four TV series including the transgender-themed Transparent.
And finally,
Moonlight got a nod in the ‘tearjerker’ category for the scene in which Paula
(Oscar nominee Naomie Harris) tells Chiron (Trevante Rhodes) that she loves
him.
Despite its
critical acclaim and Oscar pedigree, Moonlight has managed to gross less than
$30 million at the US box office.
So it comes as
little surprise that the film was not nominated for Movie of the Year alongside
the major hits Beauty and the Beast, Get Out, Logan, Rogue One: A Star Wars
Story, and The Edge of Seventeen.
Also of LGBTI
interest: Ellen DeGeneres and RuPaul Charles will compete in the Best Host
category alongside John Oliver, Samantha Bee and Trevor Noah.
RuPaul’s Drag
Race is among the contenders for Best Reality Show Competition and This is
Everything: Gigi Gorgeous is nominated for Best Documentary.
The awards will
be handed out on 7 May.
