As a contestant on a reality competition show, there quite possibly might come a point where you survey your competitors, look at how far you still have to go, and just say: “Screw it. I’m not trying anymore.” As evidenced by last night’s episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race, that very much seemed to be what happened with one-time favorite Carmen Carrera, who found it difficult to muster much of an effort with any of the challenges that were laid on in front of her. Let’s look at the tale of the tape that led to Carmen’s eventual dismissal.
Carmen’s troubles began during the mini challenge: She couldn’t muster the strength to even bother with the game of “Rusical Chairs,” as she quickly exited the silly — and rather easy — game. Then, during the main challenge where she was to record a reggae version of RuPaul’s newest single “Superstar,” her meeting with Ru’s music producer Lucian Paine was a out-and-out disaster. “Do you think,” Lucian asked Carmen after she sang a verse into the mic, “you’re performing right now?”
The (totally hot) producer was right to have asked, frankly: Carmen sounded worse than Kim Zolciak talk-singing through “Tardy for the Party” in Kandi’s studio. And the Carmen hit the runway with her not good version of “Superstar” and stunk it up with a sad look, which you can view above. What’s worse? Once she was in the bottom two — and battling against my beloved Shangela — she didn’t so much lip-synch for her life as much as she lip-synched for her death to Cher’s “Believe.” There was no question that she’d go home instead of Shangela, who, as even Manila had to admit, “turned it out.” Halle-lou to Shangela sticking around for another week.
And then there were five. Is it the right five? I’m not totally convinced that Yara would still be here, had she not gotten last week’s reprieve, but I’m happy that she’s here now, and that Carmen is gone. At least Yara appears to want it. Before Carmen sashayed away, Ru told her: “Do you believe in life after RuPaul’s Drag Race? Because I believe in you.” I believe that we’ll probably never hear anything from Carmen again, except for maybe at the season’s coming reunion episode.
As usual, I’m ignoring various other things from the episode, but one thing that cannot be ignored? The fact that, after a discussion about Alexis Mateo’s ginormous fake, “strip-hop” boobs, permanent Drag Racejudge Michelle Visage flashed her naked rack to the entire judging panel. The goods were blurred out, of course, but I mean, what? Did Michelle Visage really just flash her twins on television? I feel like we saw some astonished faces on the panel (like Ru’s here in the photo), but where was the further reaction from the rest of the folks sitting there? I mean, I don’t really care that Michelle did such a thing — in fact, it’s hilarious, which is why I’m writing about it now — but doesn’t it deserve a WTF moment? That was insane!
But what did you think, Drag Racers? Did you think Carmen gave up? Or do you think it was Shangela’s turn to “sashay away”?
