REVIEW OF BATTLE: LOS ANGELES

The Aliens are coming! The Aliens are coming! Battle: LA is another take in the never ending saga and  genre of  alien invasion movies. This time it is that LA becomes the final battle ground for the fate and future of earth.

For years, there have been documented cases of UFO sightings around the world -- Buenos Aires, Seoul, France, Germany, China. But in 2011, what were once just sightings will become a terrifying reality when Earth is attacked by unknown forces. As people everywhere watch the world's great cities fall, Los Angeles becomes the last stand for mankind in a battle no one expected. It's up to a Marine staff sergeant and his new platoon to draw a line in the sand as they take on an enemy unlike any they've ever encountered before.

What's Good about the movie:

Aaron Eckhart delivers a solid performance as a Marine Staff Sergeant who just had his retirement approved and returns to the front line to help a 2nd lieutenant and his platoon regain control of LA from the aliens. Aaron was very believable and did a good job in portraying this role and you couldn't help but feel a real connection to this Sergeant who will do anything to help his platoon succeed in their mission.

The actions scenes were very engaging. There was a real sense of a serious battle between the marines and the aliens  you could not take your eyes off the screen to see what would happen next.

What's Bad about the Movie:

I felt there was not enough done to show the human story behind the marines. More could have been done to tell their story in terms of who they were, interactions with their families and what was their story and their path prior to enlisting. Even Echkhart, though his performance was solid, it was obvious that he had endured some serious wounding emotionally and mentally which should have been further developed.

Though there was speculations and assumptions about why the aliens came, this was never established through any sort of interaction, communication or analysis of these visitors.

Overall Grade: B, it was a rather enjoyable and entertaining ride.
