Most of us
came to know Keiynan Lonsdale as a result of his role as Blue in the
blockbuster hit Love, Simon. There he captured teen hearts (and
ours) as the email writing love interest of the lead character Simon. But since
the movie's debut, Lonsdale has been focusing his talents on another aspect of
his career outside of acting — though he did appear on Love, Victor.
Earlier this year he dropped his debut album Rainbow Boy and now, he's finished
his first-ever headline performance.
In October,
Lonsdale performed for Billboard Live At-Home Pride Edition. The event itself
benefited Black Youth Project 100 and Black Rainbow, two queer, Black-led
organizations that fight for social justice within their own communities.
Given that
Australia has practically eradicated the ongoing pandemic, Lonsdale was able to
gather a crew of dancers, execute a series of costume chancers, and even
incorporate a sax player into the set. Performing his own tracks — "Gay
Street Fighter," "White Noise," and "Chocolate" — he
charts an intersectional narrative arc. The performance is certainly
encouraging for the burgeoning artist, and we're interested to see what comes
next. To see that he has no intents on shying away from his sexuality — and is
instead leaning into it unabashedly on tracks like "Gay Street
Fighter" — and that he's quite the dancer has us eagerly anticipating his
future growth.
