The first look
at the new Batwoman, with Javicia Leslie’s personalized take on the famous cape
and cowl, is here. Honestly, she looks better than we could’ve hoped!
Leslie is
playing the new Batwoman, Ryan Wilder, who will take over as the lead of the
CW’s Batwoman after the previous hero, Kate Kane, disappears.
When she first appears, she’s wearing Kane’s old costume as previously
revealed, but she quickly realizes in order to be a more powerful symbol for
Gotham City, she needs to make the look fit her and become her own hero.
Executive
producer Caroline Dries said in a release that getting a new Batwoman “meant
creating a new body design and new cowl that was undeniably a statement that
screamed ‘powerful.’” She added that she loves the new design by costume
designer Maya Mani, and “the wig was something we never perfected in season
one, and Janice Workman crushed it with this new take.”
“I love the
fact that Ryan is becoming her own Batwoman — it’s her style, her swag, and her
moment!" Leslie said. "It was an honor to be able to collaborate with
Caroline and Maya.” She also recognizes the importance of being the first Black
Batwoman.
“I felt it was
important that viewers could tell by the silhouette that Batwoman was a Black
girl” she said, “with the form-fitting suit and beautiful Afro, we definitely
nailed it!”
Back
when we first got a glimpse of Leslie in the original Batwoman
costume, we were already getting hyped. She looked great in that costume,
which was designed for Ruby Rose’s Kate Kane. But it definitely wasn’t a Ryan
Wilder costume. This new one is, highlighting her athletic build, strength, and
her identity as a Black woman.
Rose left the
show after just one season due to injuries and a grueling workload that ended
up taking a toll on the queer model and actress. Instead of recasting the same
character with a different actor, the showrunners decided that season two would
open with Kane mysteriously disappearing and a new hero putting on the mask.
Batwoman's second season premieres on the CW in January 2021.

Very strong and not highly sexualized. Good.
