RuPaul is the
Queen of Hearts in an Alice in Wonderland-themed calendar for Pirelli.
Ruling over a
celebrity cast of subjects, Mama Ru is one of several black stars photographed
for the exclusive editorial calendar.
It’s no wonder
RuPaul was convinced to get into drag.
Naomi Campbell
and Puff Daddy are the ‘royal beheaders’, while Whoopi Goldberg is the Duchess.
Lupita N’yongo
is the Dormouse, albino lawyer and model Thando Hopa plays the Princess of
Hearts, while Australian supermodel Duckie Thot is Alice.
The pictures
were taken by Tim Walker, and styled by Edward Enninful – the gay black editor
of British Vogue.
‘Inclusivity is
more part of the conversation than it has ever been before, but it goes far
beyond black and white,’ Enninful said, according to the New York Times.
‘It is about
all creeds, all colors, all sizes and people just living their truths. A lot of
this is about digital giving people voices, and a new generation who refuse to
compromise and want answers to the questions that matter to them.
‘Given the
state of the world we live in, sometimes I think we all feel like we’ve fallen
down the rabbit hole.
‘For me, a
retelling of Alice for the modern world was a perfect project, particularly
once the cast fell into place.’
The Pirelli
calendar, first published by the Italian tire company of the same name in 1964,
used to be a soft-core ode to scantily clad women.
Never sold on
the open market, it is a collector’s item sent to celebrities, clients and
chief executives.
