In an upcoming interview to be
broadcast next Sunday, Michael Sam tells Oprah Winfrey that gay men in the NFL
reached out to him.
Cabler OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network will
premiere Michael Sam, a 90-minute documentary on the life of Sam,
the first openly gay player to be drafted by the NFL.
The 24-year-old Sam, the SEC defensive
player of the year in 2013, was cut by the St. Louis Rams before the start of
the season. He then joined the Cowboys' 10-man practice squad, where he stayed
for seven weeks before being let go.
Sam questions his decision to come out
in a
clip from the documentary released late Friday.
“Did I make the right choice of coming
out and telling the world I was gay?” Sam asks. “And then I'm looking outside
thorough the window. I'm thinking that and then I felt a hand over my shoulder.
And that person was [boyfriend] Vito. And in that moment I was like, 'I don't
care what happens, I made the right choice.'”
Following the film's premiere, OWN will
broadcast an interview with Sam.
In a sneak peek from the interview, Winfrey asks
Sam, “Gay men in the NFL reached out to you and called you?” as Sam nods in
agreement.
