Michael Sam, the first openly gay
player to be drafted in the NFL, talked about coming out in a documentary which
premiered Saturday.
Cabler OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network on
Saturday premiered Michael Sam, a 90-minute film on Sam's life.
Following the premiere, Sam sat down with Oprah Winfrey for a one-on-one
interview.
The 24-year-old Sam, the SEC defensive
player of the year in 2013, was cut by the St. Louis Rams before the start of
the season. He then joined the Cowboys' 10-man practice squad, where he stayed
for seven weeks before being let go.

Despite the setbacks, Sam said that
coming out was the right thing to do.
“It didn't need to be public,” Sam
said. “Why do gay people have to do it?”
“I made the right choice to come
out,” he added.
Television cameras captured the
moment Sam learned he had been drafted by the Rams. He kissed and hugged his
boyfriend. The pair smashed celebratory cake in each other's faces.
“Everyone made a big deal out of it,”
Sam said of the “infamous kiss.” “It's just a kiss. Did you forget that I was
gay? Should I be kissing a woman instead?”
