Dear White
People and Bad Hair creator
as well as 2019 Out100 honoree Justin Simien is bringing the
galaxy’s favorite pansexual scoundrel to Disney+.
While
announcing a whole new slate of shows and movies, Star Wars announced a new Lando Calrissian series, titled Lando, is
coming and that Simien is in “the early stage of developing the
project."
Lando has long
been a fan favorite and a major crush of people of all genders, but it wasn’t
until he was played by Donald Glover in Solo: A Star Wars Story that
his sexuality became a larger point.
Solo co-writer Jonathan Kasdan was asked directly by Huffington Post back in
2018 if Lando is pansexual, and he emphatically responded “I would say
yes.”
“There’s a
fluidity to Donald and Billy Dee’s [portrayal of Lando’s] sexuality,” he
continued. “I mean, I would have loved to have gotten a more explicitly LGBT
character into this movie. I think it’s time, certainly, for that, and I love
the fluidity ― sort of the spectrum of sexuality that Donald appeals to and
that droids are a part of.”
When Glover
himself was asked, he was also totally for the idea. “There’s so many things to
have sex with [in the Star Wars universe],” he said. “I mean,
serious, I didn’t think that was that weird. Yeah, he’s coming on to everybody.
I mean, yeah, whatever. He’s like having like a ’70s swing — yeah. It just
didn’t seem that weird to me ’cause I feel like if you’re in space it’s kind of
like, the door is open! It’s like, no only guys or girls. No, it’s anything.
This thing is literally a blob. Are you a man or a woman? Like, who cares? Have
good time out here.”
Lando’s
queerness hasn’t really been explored onscreen, unless you count fucking his
robot as queer. Hopefully with Simien at the helm we’ll get to see it explored
further.
It’s not yet confirmed if
Donald Glover, who played young Lando in Solo, or Billy Dee
Williams, who originally played him, will return, but fans are hopeful —
Disney+ has been doing a great job of old stars returning for new shows, with
Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christiansen reprising their roles as Obi-Wan and
Darth Vader respectively in the upcoming Obi-Wan show.
