Brazilian diver Ian Matos has announced he is gay, saying he was
inspired Tom Daley.
The top level diver says a friend told him to stay closeted until
after the 2016 Summer Olympics.
Currently based in the Olympics host city Rio de Janiero, he told
Correio: ‘From a young age, I knew I was gay, but it was here that I got to
live my sexuality.’
Matos said the pressure of hiding his relationships, and avoiding
going to gay nightclubs, proved to be too much stress.
He said he hoped coming out would not impact his ability to be a
successful diver and not cost him any potential sponsorship.
Originally from Pennsylvania, Matos moved to Brazil to pursue his
diving career.
After winning a bronze medal in a 2012 US event, he became Brazil’s
3-meter board champion in 2013.
I only hope there'll be a epidemy of coming out!
