RuPaul’s Drag
Race was nominated for 11 Emmy Awards today, once again leading the
pack when it comes to reality TV categories. After those nominations were
announced, RuPaul shared a rare public statement on social media regarding
basic human rights for LGBTQ+ people being under threat once again.
The Emmy Award-winning Drag Race host wrote:
“As the basic
human rights of LGBTQ+ people are being threatened once again, I want to thank
our peers in the Television Academy for acknowledging the achievements of the
beautiful and talented souls that work in front of and behind the cameras
at RuPaul’s Drag Race.”
Ru continued:
“Through the
miracle of drag, our spectacular Season 14 queens have touched hearts and
opened minds around the planet. We will never take for granted the platform
we’ve been given to tell authentic queer stories, and pledge to do everything
in our power to continue to spread light, love, and laughter.”
Through Drag
Race, Ru has consistently chosen the approach of encouraging people to
vote, be patriotic, and support left-wing political figures. However, RuPaul
has a history of not being very active on social media and has kept a low
profile in times when political turmoil took over the news cycle.
In recent
times, though, RuPaul’s approach to social media appears to be slowly shifting.
Just last week, a never-before-seen photo of RuPaul getting touched up by makeup artist Raven was
shared via Instagram. Earlier this year, Ru also used Twitter to publicly congratulate Pabllo Vittar on performing at Coachella.
Even though these posts may seem commonplace for other Hollywood celebrities,
they were incredibly surprising things coming from the Drag Race host.
There also
seems to be a shift in how RuPaul is publicly handling his political points of
view as of late. This latest Instagram statement – though it was tied to the
Emmy nominations received by RuPaul’s Drag Race – was very
much a reaction to the recent events related to the overturning of Roe
v. Wade and the threat that gay marriage could be next on the list of
human rights being taken away. Last month, Ru also used his time on The
Late Late Show With James Corden to call out conservative
politicians trying to ban kids from attending drag shows.
It looks like RuPaul is perhaps becoming a less guarded individual in the public eye than he has been in recent years. In 2020, he went as far as wiping out his social media accounts without any warning or further explanation. After coming back to social media later that year, RuPaul mostly just promoted his shows, business endeavors, and media appearances.
Now, a more
unfiltered and active RuPaul seems to be emerging online – which is a great
thing for Drag Race fans to see.

Race All Stars 7 is now streaming
