The NSFW
trailer for the upcoming queer comedy Bros has finally arrived
and it's been worth the wait.
Bros is the first LGBTQ+ romantic comedy green-lit by a major studio.
Eichner co-wrote, produced, and is one of two male leads in
the Universal Pictures film. He's the first out gay man to ever write and
star in his own major studio film. The film follows Eichner as a podcast
host hired by a studio to pen a gay romantic comedy.
The
trailer shows circuit parties, family moments, gym workouts,
business meetings, and even a four-man orgy — and also a cameo of sorts
by The Advocate.
Every major
cast member in the film is LGBTQ+, including Luke Macfarlane, Amanda Bearse,
Harvey Fierstein, Bowen Yang, Ts Madison, Symone, Miss Lawrence, Guillermo
Diaz, and Guy Branum. Even the straight parts are portrayed by LGBTQ+ actors.
“From the very
beginning of developing Bros, I let everyone involved know that,
while I wanted to make a movie that was hilarious and relatable to everyone,
first and foremost I wanted to make a movie that felt authentic for the LGBTQ
folks that the movie is about — and who have been so profoundly underserved by
Hollywood over the years, particularly the major movie studios. From the
storytelling to the casting to the crew, it was crucial for me that the needs
of LGBTQ+ people were being prioritized,” Eichner said in a statement
announcing the trailer’s release.
Eichner added
that he’s been an out performer since starting stand up in New York more than
20 years.
“And while
it's insane to me that it took this long to get this movie made, it's still
incredibly exciting to me — and a real sign of progress — that the same studio
making movies like Jurassic World and The Fast and the
Furious is also releasing this R rated gay rom with an all LGBTQ+
cast, and with as much passion and enthusiasm as they release those other
films,” he said. “It's taken way too long. I wish we had a movie like Bros when
I was a kid — but I'm so excited and proud that this day has finally come!”
While he
acknowledged the historic nature of the film, Eichner said that he also
wanted Bros to be an “authentic, hilarious, and heartfelt
film” about a single queer man navigating a relationship in today's
world.
“This movie is
a long time coming. But here we are,” Eichner said. “The era of Bros is
upon us!”
Bros is out in theaters on September 30.
