NEON TREES SINGER TYLER GLENN HAPPY TO BE A GAY MORMON ROLE MODEL
Recently out gay singer Tyler Glenn, of US rock band Neon Trees,
has spoken about the effect his coming out had on the Mormon community.
Glenn came out in an interview with Rolling Stone magazine last
month, and spoke in a recent interview about the effect it had.
‘I was surprised at how many Mormon Church leaders wrote me
messages saying, ’This is great that you’re doing this.’ That really was cool’
he said.
‘On the level of being a role model for kids or LGBT Mormon youth,
I’m totally down because I come from that background and I would be able to
speak to them honestly.’
Glenn’s coming out also made waves because he is a member of The
Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints which helped fund the passage of
California's Proposition 8 in 2008 which banned gay marriage.
‘It’s terrible some of the things that have been said by church
leaders’ he said.
‘but I also feel like there’s a lot of strides that have been made
even since the Prop 8 debacle years ago.’
Glenn continues to uphold his religious beliefs and is one of the
few openly LGBTI Mormons.
‘I consider myself Mormon, I believe in Mormonism, I believe in the
Book of Mormon and I try to follow the teachings ... I don’t always attend
church on Sunday, but I wasn’t going to throw away my faith’ he said.
When news of his coming out began to circulate last month, Glenn
tweeted a positive message about his sexuality and his religion.
'Yes. I am a happy and healthy Mormon gay pop star. I don't know
what it all means, but I'm ok with it’ he said.
