"Pumped Up Kicks" is a song by American indie pop group Foster the
People. It was written and recorded by front man Mark Foster at
Mophonics in the Venice district of Los Angeles. "Pumped Up Kicks"
can be considered both a crossover hit and
a sleeper hit,
as it received airplay on modern rock stations
soon after its release in September 2010, and in the early summer of 2011 began
seeing noticeable airplay on contemporary hit radio stations. The song has
thus far reached number 3 in the US on the Billboard Hot
100, making it the first Billboard Alternative
Songs number one
single to crack the U.S. top 5 since Kings of Leon's
"Use Somebody"
in 2009. The song has been used in TV series such as Entourage,[1] Gossip Girl and The Vampire Diaries and also in the 2011
film Friends with Benefits.
Robert's got a quick hand
He'll look around the room
He won't tell you his plan
He's got a rolled cigarette hanging out his mouth
He's a cowboy kid
Yeah, he found a six-shooter gun
In his dad's closet hidden in a box of fun things
And I don't even know what
But he's coming for you, yeah, he's coming for you
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks
You'd better run, better run, outrun my gun
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks
You'd better run, better run, faster than my bullet
[x1]
Daddy works a long day
He be coming home late, yeah, he's coming home late
And he's bringing me a surprise
Because dinner's in the kitchen and it's packed in ice
I've waited for a long time
Yeah, the slight of my hand is now a quick pull trigger
I reason with my cigarette
And say your hair's on fire
You must have lost your wits, yeah
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks
You'd better run, better run, outrun my gun
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks
You'd better run, better run, faster than my bullet
[x1]
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks
You'd better run, better run, outrun my gun
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks
You'd better run, better run, faster than my bullet
[x3]
